ZEICHNUNG ZEICHNEN

We talk far too much.
We should talk less and draw more.
For my part, I would like to completely break myself of the habit of speaking
and, like creative nature, express myself solely through drawings.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

A line is much more than mere graphite on paper. It is the making visible of the invisible.

As one of the oldest forms of artistic expression, drawing existed long before paper was developed as a support material. Evidence suggests that Neanderthals, approximately 40,000 years ago, left their mark through drawings made in a cave in Spain.

Drawing is one of the simplest and most accessible ways of creating art. Almost anyone can do it. All that is needed is a tool for making marks and a flat surface. There are no expectations or constraints. The materials require minimal investment, and an artist can produce dozens of drawings and then discard them all without wasting significant resources.

Over the course of the last century, the concept of drawing has taken on an increasingly broad and open definition. Once, drawing was understood as an image created on a two-dimensional surface using a pen, pencil, or wax crayon. Over the past century, however, numerous innovative artists have expanded this definition. The American artist **Alexander Calder** described his wire sculptures as “drawings in space.” The British-Palestinian artist **Mona Hatoum**, meanwhile, creates drawings by arranging human hair into abstract patterns on handmade paper. Many other artists also combine the act of drawing with other forms of artistic expression, such as painting and collage.

Through the works of the participating artists, we wish to bear witness to precisely this liberation of drawing from the narrow framework of its traditional conception, which identifies it simply with a sheet of paper and a pencil.
